IFS YouTube Videos
Last month, I took a massive, deep dive into Dr Gabor Maté work about emotional trauma in childhood and healing it; the intergenerational transmission of trauma; and societal and cultural contributions to it. Gabor often references Dick Schwartz’s IFS (Internal Family Systems), an effective therapy for healing trauma, that is not just talk therapy. I’ve really been searching for effective, powerful and transformative therapies for a long time to help both myself and my clients heal from past experiences. Ironically, I came across IFS about 10 years ago, and even bought a book on it however it hasn’t been till now but I’ve actually taken it seriously. It seems that it’s taken till now for the world to start taking IFS seriously too. I want to share some resources with you for those who are interested.
Dr Rangan Chatterjee with Dick Schwartz
2. Rich Roll with Dick Schwartz
These two (above) YouTube videos are a good introduction to Dick‘s Internal Family Systems therapy or IFS, Podcaster and author Dr Rangan Chatterjee has been public about how he himself has done IFS in his own therapy for many years which has transformed him, according to him, so he is already a big advocate of it. Rich roll on the other hand appears slightly more skeptical but curious about the therapy. From memory there are references to leadership in both videos, both self leadership and world leadership which I thought is an interesting topic, and for those leadership coaches out there, you may find it interesting. For me, it makes sense that the “Self” with a capital S with its 9x ”C” (the 9th is Choice) qualities makes a great leader, both internally and externally.
Dick Schwartz’s therapist training video
I really love the above video by Dick Schwartz, because it’s a recent only 11 months old, it’s so dense full of useful, and really interesting information about IFS. It appears to be designed for therapists, teaching them how to do this with clients, but I think clients will equally get a lot of value from watching this in terms of learning about what this is and why it’s so valuable and what to expect. It’s quite a long video one hour and 26 minutes but it’s really packed full of stuff. For example Dick talks about the “Self” with a capital S, he talks about the different types of parts: Protectors, Exiles, Managers, and Firefighters. He talks about what I like to call “soul retrieval” or what he calls retrieval of exiles. I really love the video that he embeds where he’s working with a real client, a young man who was adopted by military parents. The client knows nothing about IFS and we can see how powerful and moving the process is for him , I really like this because we get to see hear that this is not just talk therapy, but it’s a somatic therapy which goes deep and I believe is very transformative when it comes to ceiling trauma based injury.
